"My great-grandmother was a wedding dress seamstress and helped me learn the basics until I could finally partake in a fashion design class in high school. And by high school fashion design class I mean, reworking pieces from the salvation army. I added tulle, beads, airbrush paint, and whatever embellishment I could find to these pieces to start making them my own."

Every year Mark Burton and the Council of Fashion Designers of Michigan bring some of the best and most elegant fashion from local designers to Muse, the Art of Style. This year's designers included Ashley Harris, Cavinova, Wanda Harris, Shay Oliver, and Reg Robinson. The event was held Saturday at the The MEC Conference Center in Troy.
Harris, 30, is leading the local effort to sew face masks.
She joined Magna in 2017 as a product engineer on seat trim and Harris was named Hour magazine’s best dressmaker in 2019.

That glamour is on hold. Now Harris is sewing about 40 face masks a day.
"This is why I love this company so much," Harris said. "They allow us to be entrepreneurial no matter the situation."
Harris is also researching other ways the trim team can help in the fight against coronavirus. For now, a Magna spokesman said the Novi trim team is receiving several emails a day from colleagues around the world actively sewing with Harris' and the team's instructional template.
